Ask where 10,000 steps came from and most people assume a study. There is no study. There is an advertisement, and it worked so well that it is still working sixty years later.
The short answer
The number was a product name. In 1965 the Japanese clock and instrument maker Yamasa released a consumer pedometer called the manpo-kei, which translates literally as 10,000-step meter. It launched in the years just after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, into a country worried that ordinary people had stopped moving. The target and the brand were the same thing.
No clinical trial compared step counts against outcomes before that number entered public life. The first large study to do it properly was published in 2019, fifty-four years later.
The pedometer named after the number
Two things chose 10,000, and neither was a health outcome. The first is that it is memorable, in the way round numbers are. The second is more specific: the Japanese character for 10,000 resembles a figure in mid-stride, which made it a natural fit for a device that counted walking.
There was a researcher in the picture. Dr Yoshiro Hatano, working on rising obesity in Japan around the same period, estimated that the average Japanese adult was walking somewhere between 3,500 and 5,000 steps a day and that pushing that toward 10,000 would raise daily energy expenditure enough to matter. That is a reasonable back-of-envelope calculation. It is not a tested threshold, and it was never presented as one.
The number arrived as branding, acquired a scientific reputation on the way, and kept it long after anyone checked.
Why it stuck for 60 years
Because it is a good number, in every sense except the evidentiary one. It is round, it is easy to remember, it fits on a watch face, and it feels demanding without being absurd. Then pedometers became fitness trackers and phones started counting steps automatically, and every one of them shipped with 10,000 as the default.
Defaults are the mechanism here. Most people never open the goal settings, so the default becomes the target, and a target repeated by a hundred million devices stops looking like an assumption and starts looking like a fact. That is how a 1965 slogan ended up embedded in most people's idea of what a healthy day looks like.
Health campaigns picked it up for the same reasons marketers did. A public message needs one number that everyone can remember, and there was no competing figure with better evidence behind it, because there was no figure with any evidence behind it. In the absence of data, the memorable number wins by default.
What happened when it was finally tested
In 2019 a team published a study in JAMA Internal Medicine that tracked nearly 17,000 women with an average age of 72, measuring their steps with wearable devices and following deaths for more than four years. It is the study that finally put a number to the question.
Two findings mattered. Women averaging about 4,400 steps a day had a 41 percent lower risk of death during the study than women averaging 2,700. And the benefit continued to rise with more steps but levelled off at around 7,500 a day, below the default goal sitting on their devices.
So the number was not wrong in direction. Walking more is better, which is what everyone assumed. It was wrong in placement, and specifically wrong in implying that anything under 10,000 was a failed day when most of the measurable gain had already arrived by 7,500.
It is worth being careful about what that study can and cannot support. It is observational, so it shows association rather than proof that stepping caused the difference, and its participants were older women rather than adults in general. It remains the point at which the question stopped being a matter of opinion.
What the number is still good for
It is a decent rough prompt and a poor threshold. As a nudge that gets someone off a chair, 10,000 has genuinely been useful, and there is no reason to be precious about that. What it should not be is a pass mark, because a pass mark creates a category of failed days, and failed days are the mechanism by which people quit things.
Distance is worth knowing here too. For most adults 10,000 steps is somewhere around four to five miles, which is a real time commitment on top of a working day. Anyone who quietly stopped trying because the goal was unrealistic was responding sensibly to an unrealistic goal that nobody had checked.

Why OffRamp has no step goal
OffRamp does not ship one, and that was a decision rather than an omission. Adding a step count would have been trivial: the data is already on the phone and it makes an app look more complete. It was left out because it would have implied a claim we cannot support, which is that a step number is part of what keeps weight off after a GLP-1.
What the evidence actually points to for maintenance is protein intake high enough to protect lean mass, resistance training that gives that protein something to do, and early detection of upward drift. So that is what the app tracks: a protein floor, short strength sessions, and a weight trend watched by Regain Radar. A step counter would have been a fourth number competing for attention with the three that matter.
Walking is still worth doing, and walking after meals has a measurable effect on its own terms. It just does not need a target invented to sell a pedometer.
