The Monday weigh-in has a reputation, and it earned it honestly.
What is less well known is that somebody has measured this precisely enough to model it, twice, using very different methods, and both came back with the same shape.
The short answer
Yes. A study published in Obesity in 2008 weighed 48 healthy adults on seven consecutive mornings, repeatedly, for 165 weeks at baseline and another 437 weeks during a one year intervention. At baseline, participants consistently gained weight on weekend days, defined as Friday to Monday, at 0.06 kg per day. On weekdays they did not gain, showing a non significant change of 0.02 kg per day in the other direction.
That is a small number per day and an entirely ordinary one. It is also, over a year of weekends, not nothing.
What a year of daily weigh-ins measured
The participants were 30 women and 18 men aged 50 to 60, with body mass index between 23.5 and 29.9. They were randomised into a year of food restriction or a year of daily exercise, which means this was not a study designed to catch weekends. It caught them anyway, because the protocol happened to weigh people every single morning.
That is unusual and it is why the finding is credible. Daily intake was estimated from food diaries and daily activity from accelerometers, and both measures were validated against doubly labelled water, which is the closest thing this field has to a gold standard.
Saturday eating, Sunday sitting
The researchers were able to say which behaviour produced which half of the effect, and the split is oddly specific.
Weekend gain was attributable to higher dietary intake on Saturdays and lower physical activity on Sundays, both statistically significant against weekdays. Not both on both days. Saturday is when the eating changes, Sunday is when the moving stops.
The intervention year produced the sharper result. Both groups were in negative energy balance on weekdays. On weekends, the food restriction group stopped losing weight entirely, and the exercise group gained 0.08 kg per day, driven by higher intake. The authors offered this as one explanation for the slower than expected weight loss seen across many studies, which is a fairly large claim resting on two days a week.
The weekly rhythm, mapped a second time
A 2014 analysis in Obesity Facts came at the same question from a different direction. It took 4,657 daily weight measurements from 80 adults, recorded across monitoring periods ranging from 15 to 330 days, and used semi parametric regression to model whether a group level weekly rhythm existed.
It did. Weight was higher early in the week, on Sunday and Monday, and decreased through the week. Increases began on Saturday. Decreases began on Tuesday.
So the peak is not the weekend itself. The peak lands after it, which is why Monday feels worse than Sunday night did.
The finding that predicts maintenance
Here is the result worth carrying away, and it is not the one in the headline.
The compensation pattern, meaning the weekday decline that follows the weekend rise, was strongest in people who lost or maintained weight. It was weakest in people who slowly gained. The rise was common to everyone. What separated the groups was the fall.
The authors' conclusion is unusually direct for a research paper: weight variations between weekends and weekdays should be considered normal instead of signs of weight gain. They add that long term habits may make more of a difference than short term splurges.
Read that against the way most people treat a Monday number and the mismatch is obvious. The thing being panicked about is the part everybody does. The thing that actually distinguishes maintainers is invisible on the scale, because it is a return to normal rather than an event.
Why seven days is the right window
If the cycle is weekly, then any averaging window shorter than a week will still contain the cycle. A three day average taken on a Monday is measuring the top of the wave. A three day average taken on Thursday is measuring the bottom.
Seven days is the smallest window that contains exactly one full rhythm, which means every seven day average holds one Saturday, one Sunday and one Tuesday. Compare two of those and the weekly pattern cancels itself out, leaving whatever is actually happening underneath.
How OffRamp reads a weekend
Regain Radar uses a seven day rolling average for exactly this reason. It was not chosen because a week is a tidy unit. It was chosen because the thing being filtered out has a seven day period, and a filter shorter than the signal does not filter anything.
On top of that, the radar will not say anything until the seven day average has held at or above your baseline times 1.02 for seven consecutive days. That means a genuinely bad weekend has to be followed by six more days of elevated average before the app treats it as a signal. A stronger alert threshold sits at baseline times 1.04 on the same seven day rule.
Days with no weigh-in carry the last average forward instead of resetting anything, which is a deliberate choice about how people actually behave. Nobody weighs themselves on a Saturday away from home. A tool that treats that gap as missing data ends up measuring only the mornings you felt like being measured, which is the most biased sample available.
The protein floor runs on its own track at 1.6 grams per kilogram of your goal weight, rounded to the nearest 5 grams. There is no calorie target in the app and no weekend mode, because the research here does not support treating two days differently. It supports treating one week as the unit.
