The claim shows up in every article about strength training: build muscle and it burns calories around the clock, so your metabolism does the work for you. The first half is true. The second half quietly inflates by about eight times.
The short answer
Muscle burns roughly three times what fat does at rest. It is also a small number to be tripling. Both facts are true at once, and the popular version of this claim keeps the first and hides the second.
The actual measured numbers
The figures everyone is loosely citing trace back to a set of tissue-specific metabolic rates established by Elia in 1992 and used ever since in mechanistic models of resting energy expenditure. Skeletal muscle sits at about 13 kcal per kilogram per day. Adipose tissue sits at about 4.5.
Those values have held up. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tested their general applicability across adulthood and found them sound, with age adjustment appropriate for some specific uses.
Now compare that to the number the fitness internet repeats: 50 calories per pound of muscle per day. A pound is about 0.45 kg, so the measured figure works out to about 6. The popular claim is not a rounding error. It is roughly eight times the measured value, and it does not appear to have a traceable source.
Where your resting burn really happens
This is the part that reframes the whole question, and it is genuinely surprising the first time you see it.
Your heart and kidneys run at about 440 kcal per kilogram per day. Your brain, about 240. Your liver, about 200. Those organs together make up something like 5% of your body mass and account for roughly 60% of your resting energy expenditure.
Muscle and fat are the two biggest things in your body by weight and two of the least metabolically expensive per kilogram. The organs are tiny and enormously costly.
So when people talk about muscle as a metabolic engine, they have the right instinct about which tissue is more active and the wrong sense of scale. Muscle is the cheap tissue that happens to be everywhere.
What a kilogram of muscle actually buys
Do the arithmetic honestly. Suppose you gain a kilogram of muscle, which for most people training consistently is a serious multi-month result rather than a quick one. At rest, that kilogram adds about 13 kcal a day.
Thirteen. That is a small bite of an apple. Gain an unusually good two kilograms and you have earned yourself about 26 a day at rest.
Nobody is going to notice that on the scale, and any honest version of this claim has to say so. When you see a promise that adding muscle will let you eat substantially more, the number underneath it is doing no work.
The indirect effect is a different story and it is the one worth having. People who build muscle usually got there by training, and they tend to keep moving more, lift heavier, and recover better. That activity is where a real difference in daily energy use lives. It is just not the tissue sitting there burning while you sleep.
There is a second reason the popular figure survives despite being wrong, and it is worth naming. If a kilogram of muscle really did burn 50 kcal a day, then muscle loss would explain almost the entire slowdown people notice after losing a lot of weight, and building it back would be a clean fix. That is a tidy story. The measured numbers do not support it, and the slowdown has more to do with simply being a lighter body plus a set of adaptations covered in is metabolic adaptation permanent.
The better reason to train
Strip out the metabolism argument and the case for muscle gets stronger, not weaker.
During weight loss a meaningful share of what leaves is lean tissue, not fat, and that share is largely under your control through protein and resistance training. That matters for what you can carry, how stable you are, and how well you hold a maintenance weight over years. None of that needs the resting-burn story to justify it. The resting-burn story is the weakest argument for the most valuable habit, which is a strange place for it to have ended up.
