Yes, on the balance of evidence. The clearest figure comes from a meta-analysis by Toshiaki Ohkuma and colleagues, published in the International Journal of Obesity in 2015, which pooled 23 studies and found the odds of obesity were 2.15 times higher in people who described themselves as fast eaters. Their BMI averaged 1.78 kg/m2 above the slow eaters. The reason it is bad, though, is narrower than the headline suggests, and worth understanding before you try to change anything.
The short answer
Eating quickly does not do anything harmful to you on its own. It makes it easier to eat more food than you intended before your body has finished telling you to stop, and it is that extra food, not the speed, that has effects. Speed is the mechanism, not the problem.
What the 23 studies found
The Ohkuma analysis is the largest synthesis available. Twenty-three studies, a pooled odds ratio of 2.15 for obesity in fast eaters, and a mean BMI difference of 1.78 kg/m2. The association held across a wide range of populations, which is the main reason it is quotable at all.
It also came with real heterogeneity between studies, and the association was weaker in people with diabetes. Most of the included studies measured eating speed by asking people how fast they thought they ate, which is a self-report of a habit nobody times. That does not sink the finding, but it does mean the number is a signal rather than a measurement.
Association, or cause?
This is the part usually skipped. Every study in the meta-analysis was observational, so on that evidence alone the arrow could point either way, or a third factor could be driving both. People who eat quickly might simply be hungrier, and hunger has its own causes.
What settles it is a different kind of study. Ana Andrade, Geoffrey Greene and Kathleen Melanson ran a randomised crossover in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in 2008, in which 30 women ate the same meal twice, once quickly and once slowly, and served themselves freely. In the slow condition they ate about 10% less. Same people, same food, only the pace changed. That is the causal claim the observational data could not make on its own.

Why speed changes how much you eat
Fullness is not a switch in the stomach. It is a set of signals assembled from stomach stretch and from gut hormones released as food moves through, and those hormones take time to rise. The commonly cited figure is around twenty minutes between starting a meal and the signal being fully available to you.
Eat inside that window and the meal is over before the feedback lands. You feel fine at the moment you stop, then uncomfortably full a quarter of an hour later, which is the everyday experience that makes this research believable without any of the numbers. Slower eating also produces a larger rise in the fullness-associated gut hormones for the same amount of food, so the effect compounds: more signal, and more time for it to arrive.
This is also why speed and appetite interact badly in maintenance specifically. If your hunger signalling is already unreliable after a GLP-1 or a long deficit, adding a nine-minute meal on top removes the one channel of feedback that was still working. Telling food noise apart from actual hunger is hard enough with the signal intact.
Does deliberately slowing down work?
In controlled conditions, reliably. Across trials, extending meal duration lowers intake at that meal, and the Andrade result is representative of the size of it. What is much less clear is whether people keep doing it once nobody is watching, because meal pace is a habit built over decades and reinforced by every short lunch break you have ever had.
So treat the 10% as what is available, not what is guaranteed. A change you sustain at half that size beats a change you perform for a week.
What actually slows a meal down
Removing the thing competing for your attention does more than any technique performed on the food itself. Eating at a desk with a screen open is the single most reliable way to finish a meal without registering it, and closing the laptop costs nothing.
Beyond that, the changes that survive contact with real life are structural rather than effortful. Put the fork down between mouthfuls and your hands have to restart the movement each time. Serve food that needs work, because things requiring cutting, peeling or deshelling impose a pace of their own. Start with something hot, since soup cannot be eaten faster than it cools. None of that requires you to count anything or to maintain concentration through a meal, which is exactly why it lasts longer than counting chews does.
