NEAT stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis: the energy you spend on everything that is not a workout. Standing, walking around the house, fidgeting, carrying groceries. In a controlled overfeeding study it explained a ten-fold difference in how much fat people stored on identical excess intake.
It is also largely outside your conscious control, which is the part that makes it interesting rather than actionable.
The short answer
A 1999 study in Science fed 16 non-obese volunteers an extra 1,000 kcal above their weight-maintenance needs, every day, for eight weeks, then measured where that energy went.
Two-thirds of the rise in total daily energy expenditure came from NEAT, not from exercise and not from a faster resting metabolism. Changes in NEAT accounted for the ten-fold differences in fat storage between participants, and predicted resistance to fat gain with a correlation coefficient of 0.77. Same food, same surplus, same eight weeks, and the people whose bodies quietly moved more stored dramatically less of it.
What actually counts as NEAT
The category is defined by exclusion, which is unusual for a physiological term. NEAT is all physical activity that is not volitional sporting-like exercise: working, cooking, playing, walking to a car, standing during a phone call, shifting position in a chair. The Mayo Clinic group that named it described it as covering the activities that make people vibrant, unique and independent.
That breadth is why it is large. A 2006 review in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology put the between-person variation at up to 2,000 kcal across a single day. Nobody's gym programme moves a number that far.
The posture study, and why it is uncomfortable
A 2005 study in Science put sensors on 10 lean and 10 mildly obese sedentary volunteers and recorded body posture and movement every half second for 10 days. The people with obesity were seated, on average, about two hours longer per day.
Then the researchers did the part that makes the finding hard to dismiss as a simple behaviour problem. They had the obese participants lose weight, and the lean participants gain weight, and measured posture allocation again. It did not change. Whatever sets the tendency to sit or to move appears to be biologically determined rather than a consequence of current body size. The authors estimated that adopting the lean pattern would produce roughly 350 kcal of additional expenditure in a day.
The chair argument, in the researchers' own words
The 2006 review made an argument that goes further than most weight research is willing to. Obesity was rare a century ago, the authors noted, and the human genome has not meaningfully changed since. So the rise cannot be explained by a population that suddenly acquired worse genes.
Their proposal was that the environment changed into one they called chair-enticing, and that people with an innate tendency to sit did exactly that, at scale. On that reading, the 2.5 hour sitting gap is not evidence of two kinds of willpower. It is evidence of one kind of chair meeting two kinds of biology.
The recommendation that follows is unusually concrete for a review paper: increase standing and ambulating time by about 2.5 hours a day, and re-engineer work, school and home environments so that active living is the default option rather than the effortful one. Whether an individual can find 2.5 hours of standing in a desk job is a fair objection. The direction is still more useful than being told to move more, because it names a specific quantity and puts the burden on the setup rather than on daily motivation.
It is worth being clear about what this does not claim. None of these studies show that raising NEAT causes weight loss in people who are trying to lose weight. They show that NEAT varies enormously between people, that the variation predicts what happens during overfeeding, and that the tendency looks stable. Those are observations about why bodies differ, not a protocol.
What this does and does not tell you to do
The honest version is awkward, so most articles skip it. NEAT is the single largest source of variation in daily energy expenditure between people, and it is also the component you have the least direct control over. Telling someone to fidget more is not a plan.
What the same researchers actually recommended was structural: add standing and walking time, and change the environment so that moving is the default rather than a decision you have to keep making. That is a different instruction from "exercise more". It points at where you work, how often you stand up, and whether the easy path through your day involves your legs, rather than at a training programme. It also reframes a common maintenance frustration. If you and a friend eat similarly and train similarly and your bodies behave differently, a measured ten-fold spread in fat storage on identical surplus is a more likely explanation than one of you secretly lacking discipline.
Why OffRamp has no step counter

That was a decision, not an omission. NEAT is exactly the kind of thing a phone measures badly and reports confidently. A step count captures a slice of it, misses standing, posture and fidgeting entirely, and then presents the slice as if it were the whole picture. Given the research above, a daily step number would mostly tell you which parts of your unconscious movement happened to involve walking past your pocket.
What OffRamp does track on the movement side is deliberately coarse: strength sessions per week, counted as sessions.
