Probably not for the reason you assume. A meta-analysis by Matthew Schubert and colleagues, published in Sports Medicine, pooled the studies on acute exercise and appetite-regulating hormones. It found that a bout of exercise suppresses acylated ghrelin, the main circulating hunger signal, by a median of about 16.5%, while raising the satiety hormones PYY by around 8.9%, GLP-1 by around 13%, and pancreatic polypeptide by around 15%. On the intake side, the same body of work found energy intake is not increased after exercise to compensate for what was burned.
The short answer
Straight after a session, your hormones are pointing away from eating, not toward it. The hunger you feel is real, but it's usually coming from something other than a hormonal drive to eat, which is good news, because the other explanations are much easier to do something about.
What the hormone data actually shows
The effects in the meta-analysis were small to moderate rather than dramatic, but they consistently pointed the same way: hunger signalling down, satiety signalling up. This is the phenomenon usually called exercise-induced appetite suppression, and it is one of the better-replicated findings in this corner of the literature.
Two details are worth holding on to. First, the changes are short-lived. Subjective appetite and the hormone levels behind it typically return to resting values within hours of finishing. Second, and more surprisingly, the studies that offered participants a free buffet afterward found they did not eat more to make up the difference. The automatic compensation most people assume is happening does not show up in the acute data.
Straight after a session, the hunger hormone is down and the satiety hormones are up. The feeling is coming from somewhere else.
So why does it feel like hunger
Because several other things produce a sensation that's easy to file as hunger, and none of them are the ghrelin signal the research measured. Being able to name which one you're in is most of the practical value here, since they call for different responses.
The four real explanations
Timing rather than exercise. Most people train in a window that already sits a long way from their last meal: early morning before eating, or after work with lunch several hours behind them. Ordinary hunger was building anyway and the session merely coincided with it. The give-away is that the same hunger shows up on days you don't train, at the same clock time.
Fluid loss. Thirst and hunger are genuinely easy to confuse, and the confusion is more likely straight after sweating. This is worth checking first purely because it costs two minutes and rules out a common false positive.
Delayed rather than absent. The suppression is short-lived, the energy cost isn't. For a lot of people the real increase in appetite arrives that evening or the following day, far enough from the session that it never gets connected to it. That's the appetite response the acute studies were not built to capture.
Earned permission. This one is psychological and it's probably the largest effect of the four. A completed session creates a sense of having earned something, and the hunger that follows is at least partly a licence to eat rather than a demand to. It feels physical, which is exactly why it's so persuasive.
The compensation trap
Here's why any of this matters for maintenance. A short strength session costs a modest amount of energy, and a generous post-workout meal eaten on the basis of having trained can easily exceed it. The session's real value in maintenance is not the energy it burns, it's the muscle it preserves, so a session followed by compensatory eating hasn't been wasted at all. But if you're tracking the scale and expecting the training to move it, that mismatch is where the confusion comes from.
This is the specific reason the maintenance literature keeps pointing at strength training rather than at cardio volume. Preserving muscle during and after weight loss changes the difficulty of the whole maintenance phase, which is covered in what training does that medication can't. Where the protein floor fits
Post-workout hunger is much easier to answer with something specific than with a general decision about how much to eat. Protein is the obvious candidate, partly because it's the most satiating macronutrient and partly because it's the one the session actually created a need for. The practical version is dull and it works: decide before the session what you're eating after it. The decision made in advance is very different from the one made while hungry and feeling like you've earned something, and it removes the negotiation entirely.
